Where Did My Business Name Come From…

by | Oct 22, 2021 | Blog | 1 comment

For over a year now I have been asked “where does my business name come from” and “why Citrine VA”. Keep reading to find out the meaning behind my business brand and also, how you can create your business name.

What’s in a name?

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose/ By any other name would smell as sweet.”

This is Juliet’s line when she is telling Romeo that a name is nothing but a name and it is hence a convention with no meaning behind it. (Door Shakespeare)

What’s the importance of a name?

It’s our identity, right?! It’s personal, cultural, a sense of who we are and where we belong. A name can be so incredibly important but the reasons are always different and unique to you.

First things first – Where did my business name come from?

Since rebranding my business, I’ve had a lot of comments, questions, and interest in my business name. People have asked me;

  • Why ‘Citrine’?
  • What does it mean?
  • Why did I choose it?
  • How did I come up with this as my business name?

The short answer is, I have been through a lifetime of personal events which led me to self-discovery and what I really wanted out of the rest of my life.

The long answer… grab a cuppa and keep reading!

My career started out in corporate, working for big companies at supervisory level. I enjoyed most of my work but disliked working for managers and deadlines. Corporate was not my thing.

I loved helping people, so I decided to work in the care industry and loved it. It was rewarding and satisfying, a real eye-opener. I did that for 5-6 years but, I wasn’t happy, the work was about caring for those that needed it and not looking after the employee. As much as they needed care, I also wanted employee benefits but I also wanted to support people in my own way, I just wasn’t sure what that was.

My career never took off in a way that I had hoped. I was also focused on my family and raising my children. I’m a people person, a people pleaser, and thrive on supporting others.

I wanted more.

Hartbeeps in Stratford-Upon-Avon

In 2016, I bought a baby franchise, running sensory classes in Warwickshire which was the most fun I have ever had! Who wouldn’t want to play, dance around, and cue over babies and toddlers all day? I loved seeing their little faces light up when they saw me at the start of a class and usually it was because I had magical lights or ribbons in my hands for them to play and dance with. Our classes were magical!

Soon, I discovered I absolutely loved running a business and all that it entailed. From setting up booking systems to email enquiries, preparing scripts, playlists, props, social media and so much more! As a child, I was a dancer for a big dance company and danced in the All England Finals many times, so to be able to play, dance, sing and teach babies and children was a beautiful experience and one I worked hard at whilst I had my franchise.

I continued to work in the Franchise industry and learned more and more. I developed my skills by becoming a VA Associate with a VA Agency part-time, and my skills and confidence grew from there.

January 2019, I took the leap of going full freelance, setting up my own VA business as a Sole Trader, trading as ‘Makin Associates’. I started networking with local businesses in person and online where I gained clients from recommendations. I never would have entertained networking in my corporate life, I didn’t have the confidence then but after running Hartbeeps classes, I started to come out of my shell and threw myself into networking. I found out a lot about myself and that, people actually like me – “You’re a really approachable and likeable person” which is what the host of a networking group once said to me and then asked me to be an ambassador for the group. Life was starting to change for me professionally and it felt really good.

Later in 2019, massive changes happened in my personal life once again. I had been in a really difficult situation for years and I couldn’t continue with life the way it was, so I separated from my husband, (now divorced) and got through it with lots of support and to be honest, I’m still having support with this now because let’s face it, things don’t just end because it’s the end on paper right?!

Once I had the space I needed, the time for reflection and to think, I chose to not let what had happened to take over and ruin what I had begun with my business, I really felt it was just the beginning and I had so much more to do with it. I had finally found something for me, for my career, and something for my children to see that, YOU CAN ACHIEVE ANYTHING YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO.

Despite everything going on, I continued with my business whilst working part-time, I joined the most amazing community with TechPixies and won a place in one of their boot camp courses in a competition. I loved learning the basics of social media and it taught me what I already knew, just from discovering it myself since going freelance.

2020, the year of the pandemic created magic in my life personally and professionally! It literally has been life-changing and I’ll be honest, it was one of the best years of my life! I took a massive leap into learning about myself, putting me and my children first which ultimately moved over into my business and I started really creating the dream. I discovered crystals, I got into yoga, meditation, healthy habits… lots of lifestyle choices, and of course lots of business choices by joining memberships, creating new connections and skilling-up.

This is where Citrine began for me…

I was invited to try a personalised crystal prescription. I had no idea what this was but I looked into it and it felt magical, like a whole experience to a sense of wellness about myself, to accept things in my life, to make changes, and to give me a sense of empowerment.

I wrote a short story to Caroline at Ascending Angels and she created a unique crystal bracelet to aid therapy and healing, but little did she know it would be so much more to me than this. My bracelet arrived with the crystals; Blue Lace Agate (soothing & positivity), Green Moss Agate (love for the self, mentally & emotionally), AAA Citrine (Inspires prosperity & abundance, raising self-esteem and creativity), Rose Quartz (restores trust & harmony in relationships) and Bloodstone (grounding, hope & wellness).

I also did my own research and found Citrine is associated with Positivity and Optimism. Citrine is MY Crystal.

I couldn’t get the meaning out of my head, it really helped me day-to-day and helped me power through to where I am today. And that’s how it happened…

So, in September 2020, I rebranded my business to “Citrine VA”. A name that meant something. A name that was purely for me and my business. A name that would uncover a whole new world for me and my family. I created a new fresh look, with fresh ideas, fresh images, fresh content, as well as upskilling and openly sharing my journey.

I wanted Citrine VA to become a “Support for Creatives”.

In January 2021, I signed up for the BIG TechPixies course, the Social Media Magic and it’s been a wonderful journey so far… becoming CPD certified in Social Media platforms has been amazing. It has shown me what I already know, what I’ve had to learn, and most of all, what extras I can provide to my clients. Joy, the Founder of TechPixies, has been one of the most inspirational women I know in my freelance life. She has helped me grow from strength to strength and has really made a great positive impact on me and so many others! The community is the best community I have ever been a part of. I am forever grateful for finding TechPixies.

I am now part of VA memberships, Social Media memberships, Networking groups. I have a range of clients, most of whom are coaches, referred through word of mouth.

I have now got a small team of 3 associates and 2 of them are TechPixies! We are not only a team supporting clients, but we also support each other.

I have been creating my own website with the support of Julia Ferrari Web Designs which has been amazing to skill up in this way.

I have also now signed up for a bespoke package with Olivier Consultancy to teach me all things Dubsado, how to create projects, workflows, streamlining systems and how to implement these for clients.

The biggy… I have just started training this September with Optimus Coach Academy to become a highly qualified ICF accredited Coach! I am beyond excited about this journey; it’s inspiring, eye-opening and I look forward to our training days each week. Our cohort has created a great little community between us, we meet on zoom outside our training hours and support each other day to day. I’m excited for this BIG change in direction and I’m hoping I can develop in a way to benefit the VA business, my Associates, and our clients. Most of all, I’m already seeing the changes it’s had on me and how I’m developing a coaching mindset. It’s a powerful time.

I have big ideas and plans for the two business and my freelance life.

Next up – How you can create your business name…

You now know, where my business name came from and how I went on a whole journey of self-discovery.

Now it’s your turn. Let’s find your business name!

I want you to do a mind map.

Have you heard of one of these before? It’s a way for you to visually organise information, jot things down one word at a time, and play with the ideas in your head.

Be creative and dig deep. Write it all down, no matter how relevant or irrelevant it feels. It all matters and will help you get to where you want to be.

Now, find some colourful pens and a piece of large paper – I always find colour helps me get creative and in the flow.

  • Start with YOU as the centerpiece of information in a circle and draw spider legs…
  • Note down what you enjoy…
  • Note down what you love…
  • Note down why you are here creating a business name
  • Note down what matters to you…
  • Note down what you want your business to be
  • Note down what your business means to you

If you’re struggling with ideas, come back to it later.

You’ve started the process, you’ve started that journey in your head, your subconscious will continue to think about these things without you truly realising.

It will come.

In the meantime, try experimenting with something else that may help you explore your ideas, like meditation, a podcast, or even a visualisation exercise.

These ideas usually come to you when you least expect them, and they are THE BEST IDEAS! These can happen whilst doing the dishes, on a walk, it can wake you in the middle of the night – so keep a notebook with you.

This is when it becomes REVOLUTIONARY! Mine was!

Have fun getting creative and enjoy the journey!
